Using AI, we automate as much as possible, including property and tenancy creation, with August intelligence pre-populating details from uploaded tenancy agreements.

About the role

Our Product & Engineering team is building the future of renting, and our mobile app is at the core of that experience.

As an experienced Senior Android Developer, you’ll be responsible for crafting a seamless, high-performance mobile experience for landlords and tenants. You’ll own the Android development process, making key technical decisions and ensuring a best-in-class experience for our users.

This role is ideal for someone who thrives in an early-stage start-up environment, where autonomy and collaboration go hand in hand. You’ll work closely with Product, Design, and Backend Engineering to build and scale the Android experience at August.

What you’ll be doing

• Co-lead the development of the native Android app by building high-quality user experiences using Java or Kotlin.

• Ensure best-in-class UI/UX by working closely with our designer to implement simple, intuitive mobile experiences that adapt across screen sizes.

• Champion best practices and drive modern Android development principles, UI guidelines, and design patterns.

• Optimise performance and scalability to ensure the app is fast, reliable, and efficient for all users.

• Integrate with REST APIs by working closely with the backend team to ensure smooth API integration and data flow.

• Maintain a high-quality CI/CD pipeline by ensuring smooth releases and automated testing processes.

• Work in a fast-paced Scrum team. Operate in weekly sprints, with most days meeting-free to focus on deep work.

• Bring a keen eye for detail and user-centric thinking to the app’s development.

Skills you should hold

• 3+ years of professional Android development experience, delivering high-quality commercial apps.

• Strong proficiency in Java or Kotlin, with deep knowledge of the Android SDK.

• Experience designing mobile experiences for variable screen sizes in a native Android environment.

• Strong knowledge of Android UI design principles, interface guidelines, patterns, and best practices.

• Familiarity with Android frameworks and libraries to accelerate development.

• Solid understanding of HTTP, REST APIs, and working with JSON.

• Demonstrable portfolio of previous Android app work showing high-quality UI/UX.

• Experience with unit and UI testing frameworks to maintain high code quality.

• Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines for Android app releases.

• A keen eye for detail and elegant mobile UI/UX, ensuring a seamless user experience.

• The ability to work autonomously in a fast-paced startup environment, while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams.

• Experience with Jetpack Compose, Clean Architecture, or MVVM is a plus.
