About the role

Our Product & Engineering team is building the future of renting, and our backend services are the foundation of that experience.

As a Senior Backend Engineer, you’ll be responsible for designing, building, and maintaining scalable, reliable infrastructure and backend systems that power our product. You’ll play a key role in shaping our technical architecture and ensuring our systems are secure, performant, and developer-friendly.

This role is ideal for someone who thrives in an early-stage startup environment, where autonomy and collaboration go hand in hand. You’ll work closely with our iOS and Android teams to build and evolve the core services at August.

What you’ll be doing

• Design and build robust, scalable backend services using Go and JavaScript.

• Own and evolve our cloud infrastructure on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), ensuring security, performance, and reliability.

• Collaborate with engineers to design and provision infrastructure using Terraform. ensuring consistency and scalability across environments.

• Build and maintain Dockerised services deployed through Kubernetes and orchestrated via Argo Workflows.

• Collaborate with frontend and mobile engineers to design clean, efficient APIs and integrations.

• Monitor and improve performance across our infrastructure stack, ensuring fast response times and low error rates.

• Ensure strong observability through logging, metrics, and alerts, supporting a high-quality developer experience.

• Drive automation and CI/CD best practices, enabling smooth, repeatable deployments with minimal downtime.

• Participate in code reviews, technical discussions, and architectural decisions that help us scale and evolve the platform.

• Work in a fast-paced Scrum team. Operate in weekly sprints, with most days meeting-free to focus on deep work.

Skills you should hold

• 3+ years of professional backend development experience, ideally in a startup or high-growth environment.

• Proficiency in Go and/or JavaScript, with a track record of building production-grade services.

• Experience working with containerized applications using Docker and orchestrating them with Kubernetes.

• Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code and deployment tools like Argo Workflows or similar.

• Solid experience with cloud platforms (preferably OCI, or transferable experience from AWS, GCP, or Azure).

• Strong understanding of API design, data modelling, and working with RESTful services.

• Experience managing infrastructure as code with Terraform, ideally in a production Kubernetes environment.

• Experience designing and managing CI/CD pipelines for backend systems.

• Focus on clean, maintainable, well-tested code, with attention to performance and security.

• The ability to work autonomously in a fast-paced startup environment, while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams.
