HMRC has signed me up for Making Tax Digital. What do I do now?

August HMRC MTD submission

Since September 2026, HMRC has been signing up landlords and sole traders whose qualifying income was over £50,000 in 2024 to 2025 and who had not joined themselves. HMRC confirms it by letter or in your online account. Sign in to HMRC online services, check your income sources are right, and choose MTD software for landlords, because HMRC does not provide any. Then send any overdue quarterly updates as soon as you can. Your 2025 to 2026 tax return is still due by 31 January 2027 in the usual way. If you think you were signed up in error, contact HMRC's Self Assessment helpline.
